The town of Payson, situated in the heart of Arizona, offers an array of amenities for the residents of Chaparral Pines. Natural beauty of Payson

  • Hike more than 240 miles of Forest Service trails in the Tonto National Forest. The forest hugs the side of the Mogollon Rim, which extends for 200 miles. If you'd rather drive the rim, venture out on Rim Road, which offers 42 miles of mountain-clinging terrain that climbs to more than 8,000 feet.
  • Utilize the 2.9 million acres of the Tonto National Forest for picnicking, camping, boating, fishing, horseback riding and hunting.
  • Visit the world's largest natural travertine (calcium carbonate), Tonto National Bridge Creek, only 10 miles north of Payson.
  • Enjoy three lakes, four miles of walking paths and a children's playground at Green Valley Park.

  • Explore the area's prehistoric past at the Shoo-Fly Indian archaeological site.

  • Ski lovers will enjoy cross-country skiing opportunities and cabin rentals at the Forest Lake Touring Center.
  • Gila County Community College offers classes and degree programs and is only one mile west of Chaparral Pines and The Rim Golf Club.

  • Surrounded by the Tonto National Forest, the town of Young, in Pleasant Valley, attracts campers, fishermen and hunters. It is only 33 miles from Payson.
  • The sister communities of Pine and Strawberry, separated by only three miles, offer the Blue Ridge Reservoir, Bear Canyon Lake, Knoll Lake and many more recreational outlets just 15 miles north of Payson.
  • Only 90 miles separates Payson and the bustling metropolis of Phoenix. Venture south to enjoy all the arts and entertainment venues, exquisite dining facilities and professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey.

Gila County Community College’s new state-of-the-art Rim Country campus is conveniently located one mile west of Chaparral Pines and The Rim Golf Club. A variety of classes and degrees are offered including:

Gila County Community College is a two-year public community college. It is a member of the Arizona Community College System and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

In addition to the college credit program, the campus often plays host to various speakers, workshops and community education opportunities. It is also the home of a “College for Kids” summer art program.
